Bobby Jo's Diner Happy with Sound Service!
Latest News

Testamonial:

Bobby Jo's 50s Diner is an authentic 1950's diner on Southend Sea Front. We, Tony and Jo Cox (husband and wife team) pride ourselves on the way we have created an old style american diner with candy pink walls and aqua coloured booths. The walls are covered in old black and white 50s pictures of film and music stars. The waiters and waitresses are dressed in uniforms made from vintage patterns to create the exact look of an old 1950s diner. As you walk in you truly feel as if you have "stepped back in time". Music played is only from the the late 40s, 50s and up to 1962 (when true rock n roll died).

A huge part of the diner experience is the music being played and what it is being played on. Our sounds come from a Sound Leisure Nostalgia Juke Box (the 1015) which is a recreation of the best selling 1946 Wurlitzer 1015. We visited many a showroom to find the right juke box for our diner, it had to look the part exactly to fit in with our needs of authenticity we were trying to create. Our minds were made up as soon we visited Sound Leisure, we were late arriving to their office but they kindly stayed open when normally they would have left to show us around and have a chat. We found this extremely professional and this truly impressed us as not many people would have done this. We did not feel pressured at all to buy any product they showed us but we could tell straight away that the 1015 they showed us was "the one" for us. We were shown around the factory and shown exactly how each jukebox was lovingly made by hand. The craftmanship was outstanding and the jukeboxes were solid as well as beautiful. Our minds were made up and the 1015 would soon be ours.

When we finally had prepared Bobby Jo's for opening the final touch was the jukebox. Nothing gave us more pleasure and satisfaction then turning it on and hearing the wonderful sounds of doo wop coming from our beautiful machine, we instantly felt we had drifted back to the 50s, it was quite moving. We were now complete and ready to face the public.

We cannot thank Sound Leisure enough for their sheer professionalism in dealing with us from the moment we first met when they stayed open for us to the present day. They delivered the jukebox as promised on the day and set it up and gave us training on how to us it. We haven't had any problems with the jukebox but we are 100% sure that if we ever did they would be there to assist within a moments notice. We at Bobby Jo's highly recommend Sound Leisure and we would welcome anyone down to the diner to see our jukebox and ask us ourselves about the service we received.

Thanks so much for all you have done for us.

teenage cancer trust Soundleisure cheque hand over

Chris Black from Soundleisure is seen here handing over a cheque for £3,284 to Heather Bowen, Regional Campaigns Manager for the new Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

The donation was raised by Chris and his friends cycling the entire canal path from Leeds to Liverpool and they have requested it be spent on younger teenagers from the local area who are being treated for cancer at the new unit in Leeds.

Soundleisure juke boxes can be seen in many of the teenage units around the country and add a dazzling resource for teenagers and young people who are currently undergoing treatment.

MILLIBAND DRAWN TO Xi JUKEBOX

Ed Milliband with Sound Leisure XI Jukebox

The Sound Leisure Xi’s impact is immediate with its iconic design, vibrant colour and the powerful sound being delivered by a specially developed stereo speaker system, custom configured to deliver the precise output of the iPod. With a hypnotic presence that refuses to shy into the background, the Xi is meant to be seen and most definitely heard.

Ed Miliband, the former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change  could not resist the appeal of the machine whilst visiting one of our suppliers in the North of England recently.

TCT SIGNED JUKEBOX WINNER

Latest News

Above: Jeremy Sharman, winner of the TCT signed jukebox

Last month the Teenage Cancer Trust organised a series of fundraising concerts featuring some of rock music’s biggest stars. Cleverly, they installed a Sound Leisure classic jukebox in the Green Room and contrived for the artists to autograph it, with the intention of auctioning it at a charity bash, to further boost the funds raised. This totally unique jukebox bore the signatures of Roger Daltrey, Noel Gallagher, The Specials, Arctic Monkeys and Josh Homme, enigmatic frontman of rockers Queens of the Stone Age.

The jukebox was the 9th jukebox to be co-sponsored by Sound Leisure on behalf of the TCT. Last weekend at the Old Rectory in Burnham Deepdale, a sleepy costal village in Norfolk, the auction was held. The location was also the finish point of a charity bike race held the same day.

Colin of Sound Leisure delivered the jukebox to the generous successful bidder, Mr Jeremy Sharman of Northamptonshire (pictured). To our knowledge, there has never been a jukebox autographed in this way, making it a totally unique piece of rock memorabilia.

TCT AUCTION WINNER

Latest News

Above: TCT auction winner Mrs Fields with her Sound Leisure jukebox.

The Teenage Cancer Trust of East Anglia recently held a unique auction for a Sound Leisure classic jukebox, similar to the machine that has now been installed during the past 12 months in a multitude of TCT units around the country. The jukebox was co-sponsored by Sound Leisure and
the TCT.

The auction took place at a Fine Arts Party hosted by Cheffins the auctioneers in Cambridge, and the invited guests were mostly local
supporters of the charity.

The evening was extremely well attended and guests were treated to canapes and wine until the bidding commenced.

The winning bid was generously offered by Mr & Mrs Chris Fields of Cambridgeshire, Colin Vernon from Sound Leisure delivered and installed the machine the following day. Mrs Fields was still in a state of shock and surprise at making the winning bid when the machine was delivered!

Everyone who has a Sound Leisure box knows how much fun it is to have your own jukebox, especially over the festive season, and our sincere appreciation goes to Chris and his wife for this show of support to The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Above pic: Willem Weijburg of Jukebox Gallery (L) Receives the plaque from Sound Leisure's Colin Vernon to certify them as the official distributor for The Netherlands

It was a quick turnaround after Jukebox Madness to head to Holland for this years ‘Rock around the Jukebox’. Despite the worst intentions of the Dutch roadbuilding authorities, Saturday’s crowd eventually arrived, most of them having been rerouted halfway round Holland. So it was slow to start on Saturday, but there was a surpisingly larger crowd for the Sunday. For the first time, our ‘1015’ model was on display here. We were constantly being asked “Hoeveel is de Wurlitzer?” (How much is the Wurlitzer?) and had to explain that this stunning jukebox was actually a Sound Leisure machine. Once that was out of the way, we could demonstrate the superior build quality and let the visitors hear how good it sounded.

There was a very significant moment for Sound Leisure, when we presented a plaque to Willem Weijburg of Jukebox Gallery. This was in recognition of them becoming our exclusive distributors in the Netherlands. We have built up a very strong trading partnership with them over the last 2-3 years and have been very impressed with their professional approach and commitment to developing the Sound Leisure brand in Holland and Belgium, these being areas where we previously had a small market share. They have offered a great deal of positive input to our styling and design departments which will further consolidate our relationship.

This show was the last for 2009, but we expect to be busy now until the year end, when we traditionally have high demand. Although our retro jukeboxes are handbuilt in the old-fashioned way, our production levels will be higher than normal to cope with the last minute orders we receive, some people even trying to order a jukebox on Christmas eve for same day delivery!

JUKEBOX MADNESS 09!
Jukebox Madness celebrated a landmark 21st birthday this year. From its humble jukebox beginnings it is now a complete retro showcase, with records, period clothing and furnishings featuring strongly, alongside the more familiar jukebox dealers. This year’s show was extremely well attended and Alan and Colin had a busy few days, particularly as they were showing the new ‘1015’ model, making its ‘Madness debut. As the only jukebox manufacture exhibiting at the show, we did not know if the credit crunch would be a factor affecting sales this year, but we were pleased to have a very healthy response, and we will have a busy time ahead completing all the deliveries in time for Christmas.

We had our usual visit from Elvis (actually it was Rob Kingsley, an amazing look and soundalike www.elvistributeuk.com and even Marilyn made a fleeting appearance!

Thanks to Rebecca and the team for the excellent organisation, and we look forward to the next  21 years!

BrightonBRIGHTON JUKEBOX SHOW
BRIGHTON 18TH - 19TH APRIL 2009

After a 2 year absence, Sound Leisure exhibited at this year’s Jukebox Show, held at Brighton racecourse. It was a perfect opportunity to launch the new ‘1015’ model to the general public, and to demonstrate the full range of retro jukeboxes.

The weather was ideal. Bright and sunny but not hot enough to tempt all the trippers on to the beach! The show was typically full of jukebox dealers, record stalls, and every kind of 1950’s memorabilia you can imagine, plus a cruise of classic American cars, trucks and motorbikes.

The ‘1015’ was very well received, particularly when people could see the build quality, and hear the brilliant audio output, and several orders were taken.

Here at Sound Leisure, we are very aware that the demand for all things ‘retro’ and ‘vintage’ is growing from strength to strength, and shows like Brighton seem to be attracting a new breed of younger people who are fascinated by kitsch items from the 1950’s and 60’s. So, for us the show was a resounding success, and we have already booked for 2010!

1015 LAUNCHES

SOUND LEISURE CREATES 1015 DREAM MACHINE!

{pic - Sound Leisure Chairman Alan Black and R&D Head Phil Patterson with the NEW 1015}

The latest nostalgia jukebox from Sound Leisure is the realisation of a dream for Chairman Alan Black.

For over 30 years, Alan has wanted to create a classic jukebox that would be every bit as special as the 1946 Wurlitzer 1015, which remains to this day, the biggest selling jukebox of all time. The 1015 set a benchmark, which has only now been met by the talented craftsmen and women at the Sound Leisure workshops in Leeds.

Of the original 65,000 1015s sold, only around 6,000 remain in the market and would now cost over £10,000 to buy. These jukeboxes held twenty-four 78 RPM records that were only playable on one side. Times have of course changed, and Sound Leisure has updated its Nostalgia model to hold 80 CDs, as well as having iPod connectivity.

But what sets the Sound Leisure Nostalgia jukebox apart from others in the market is the attention to detail. It has a hand-formed cabinet featuring beautiful bubble tubes, an aluminium-cast speaker grill, antlers, and base. Just one Nostalgia jukebox takes around 45 man hours to produce, and incorporates the skills of departments including the wood shop, machine shop, polishing, assembly, wiring and final test.

“The new Nostalgia truly is a dream machine. It harks back to the glory years of the 1015, which some believe was the greatest jukebox of its time. We have brought the design into the 21st Century, without sacrificing any of the quality that made the 1015 justifiably famous,” says Alan Black.

“We realise that our latest Nostalgia is set to become a collector’s item, in the same way as many of our other Classic jukeboxes. We are initially aiming the box at the consumer/home market, but as the machine is available with a coin-mech – commercial use is also possible,” says Chris Black, Sound Leisure Managing Director.

Teenage Cancer Trust Bike Ride

Late last year Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) approached Sound Leisure and asked whether we would consider co - sponsoring jukeboxes for each of the ten new specialist £2,000,000 units that the charity was aiming to build nationwide. So far we have delivered 4 machines to the charity and intend providing machines to the remaining units as soon as they have been completed. From witnessing first hand what this charity is aiming to achieve we have nominated TCT as our chosen charity for 2009.

At a time when your body is changing, your social life is everything and you’re still trying to figure out who you are, getting cancer can seem like an impossible blow to take. But thanks to Teenage Cancer Trust, thousands of young people are taking it, and coming out fighting.

There’s never a good time to get cancer, but for a teenager the timing seems particularly cruel. Young people can get some of the most rare and aggressive forms of cancer. The emotional upheaval of adolescence can make a cancer diagnosis even harder to cope with.

Every day in the UK, six young people will have to face that diagnosis. Teenage Cancer Trust understands that teenage cancer requires specialist care and in fact, that young people have a much better chance in their fight against cancer if they are treated by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored to their needs.
Teenage Cancer Trust builds units in NHS hospitals which improve the quality of life and chances of survival for young people with cancer. But as Teenage Cancer Trust receives no government funding, Teenage Cancer Trust rely on voluntary donations.

Teenage Cancer Trust estimate that with the units currently around the UK, only half of the teenagers diagnosed with cancer now have access to this dedicated, specialist support. Teenage Cancer Trust’s aim is to build enough units so that, by 2012, every single teenager with cancer will be treated on one.

A quote from a recent patient at the newly opened Sheffield TCT unit;

“Stepping from a ward onto the Teenage Cancer Trust Sheffield Unit is like moving from a hospital, into the corridor of a relaxed hotel or a friend’s house – some of the snug doors are open and music filters out, making the atmosphere seem far more youthful, friendly and relaxed. Being treated in this environment helps to break down the barriers and dispel the feeling of isolation – something that is only too apparent on an adult ward. TCT has paid attention to every detail with direct thought for the teenage group. No matter how miserable you feel when you enter the hospital, the smiles of the patients and the feeling of togetherness created by the Unit never fail to brighten the day."

140 MILES : LIVERPOOL TO CASTLEFORD : 22ND/23RD MAY
A group of friends and colleagues have decided to ride the Leeds – Liverpool canal in aid of this charity, on May the 22ND the 140 mile bike ride will start in Liverpool and end in Castleford with the aim of raising funds for TCT.

Dave Wilson with his Sound LeisureClassic Stories
Daves Isle Of Man Adventure!

{pic - Dave Wilson with a couple of his Sound Leisure Jukeboxes}

I run a small company based in North Wales which hires out jukeboxes for Weddings and Parties.

Just before Christmas I received an enquiry from someone on the Isle of Man regarding the hire of a Gazelle machine for a 30th Birthday Party to be held at Douglas Golf Club!

Although I explained that I was based in North Wales and the cost of hire would have to include the cost of the ferry, accommodation and fuel costs (before the basic hire charge) the customer was absolutely adamant that they wanted a jukebox at this function.

So after agreeing to pay the hire cost and organizing the ferry for my car and my partner and accommodation at a top hotel for two nights (the ferry timings meant it was not possible to just stay 1 night!) we traveled over to IOM by ferry on the Friday, spent Saturday driving all over the island, including driving the TT course (it is a beautiful place especially with no traffic!). We delivered the jukebox to the venue that night, set up and left the party to just enjoy themselves (after generating much interest from the ‘locals’ whilst setting up).

When we returned to collect the machine the party was still in full swing (despite the landlord asking the revellers to ‘make that track the last one’) and after several further songs eventually everyone left having thoroughly enjoyed the party, including Suzy Quattro, Gary Glitter and the Ghostbusters (it was a fancy-dress!)

So although we have been to some high profile venues, this weekend trip to the IOM will stand out for some time to come.

Cheers

Dave Wilson

Sound Leisure are proud to be supporters of Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young people with cancer. The charity is building 10 specialist units nationwide. Sound Leisure have so far co-sponsored 2 of their classic jukeboxes in the famous St. James hospital in Leeds.

This is part of our ongoing support for this very worthy organisation and we made a conscious decision not to send Christmas cards in 2008, instead making a donation to the charity. Should any of our customers wish to give their support, please contact us for the charity’s details.

In October 08, the purpose-built Bexley Wing unit was officially opened by the Duchess of York, and her daughter Eugenie.

Elvis and ColinJukebox Madness 2008
October 2008

{Left: Elvis asks Sound Leisure's Colin Vernon for his autograph...}

Following on from the Rosmalen ‘Rock around the jukebox’ show, the trucks were loaded for ‘Jukebox Madness 2008’ at Kempton Park racecourse. This is the event which kickstarts our run up to Christmas, and this year’s event was as hectic as usual, and for us, enjoyable and successful. Previously run by Lesley Winward, the show was run this year by her daughter Rebecca who did a brilliant job organising and promoting the event of which Sound Leisure were once again the main sponsor.

Pride of place on our stand was the ‘Ice Box’, a jukebox with the brilliant ‘Diamond Pack’ lighting system and an iPod docking station. This contrasts with the traditional wooden cabinet and warm glowing colours of the flagship ‘Manhattan’ model. This caused heated debates on our stand, for some reason, females wanted to go for the traditional model, and the menfolk were pushing for the modern look. Thankfully, no blood was shed!  Either way, we took enough orders to keep our skilled cabinet makers busy and for all our potential customers, we urge you to get your orders in early for Christmas!

As the images show,‘Jukebox Madness’ still remains a great day out for anyone interested in Fifties memorabilia, music, clothing, and of course, classic jukeboxes.

Rosmalen "Rock around the Jukebox" 2008 Show
September 2008

Sound Leisure were the guests of ‘Jukebox Gallery’ for Europe’s biggest Rock’n’Roll extravaganza. Top quality live bands, a car park full of classic cars, numerous record and clothing stalls together with the biggest collection of jukeboxes on the planet, make this a must-see event. We met people from all over mainland Europe together with a fair smattering of Brits.

Although Sound Leisure is well established in the U.K., we are working hard now to establish our reputation for quality and reliability throughout Europe. Jukebox Gallery are proving to be excellent partners for us with their professional approach to sales and service.

Sound Leisure is honored to have signed a landmark agreement with the world’s premier distributor and restorer of classic and antique jukeboxes.

Jukebox Gallery BV is based in the Netherlands and is a specialist agent for all types of modern and latter-day jukeboxes, with a global reputation. The company’s decision to stock the

Sound Leisure’s hand-built range of classic jukeboxes is a huge compliment.

Alan, Chris and Michael Black visited Jukebox Gallery in Holland with Colin Vernon who runs the Classic side of the business to finalise the deal and also have a guided tour of their facility.

Sound Leisure's Chris Black commented,
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Sound Leisure to introduce its range of Nostalgia boxes to more European customers. The only way for us to enter new markets with this type of specialist product is with a team of dedicated, professional partners. After visiting Jukebox Gallery’s emporium in Holland, I believe we would have to go a long way to find anyone with such an amazing set-up. We were frankly overwhelmed at the company’s expertise and professionalism and feel they have exactly the same ethos as us regarding customer service and after-sales. Anyone who ever has the chance to visit their showroom and museum that houses what must be the world’s finest collection of antique jukeboxes and amusement machines should take the opportunity, it is an awe-inspiring experience - we were all like kids in a sweet shop”.

Jukebox GalleryShow Report 2007!
Jukebox madness, Rosmallen & Grand Designs

This years Jukebox Madness was one of many shows and exhibitions that fell within September and October. In a 2 week period we exhibited at Jukebox Madness, Grand Designs at the N.E.C., and the Rosmalen Jukebox Show in the Netherlands.

Kempton Park was blessed again with clear bright weather, a fact appreciated by the owners of the classic 50’s American cars that provide a fabulous pageant in the car park.

The Sound Leisure stand was busy as usual, and it was great to see past customers who like to come and chat about how much they enjoy their machines, plus potential new customers. New products this year included the ‘Nostalgia Multimedia’, a complete entertainment package, featuring CD downloading, TV, DVD, Games, and a powerful PC, housed in a classic handbuilt cabinet. Also on show was the new ‘Melody i’, an iPod only jukebox. Several of the machines sold at the show incorporated the magical ‘Diamond Pack’ lighting option, a feature that can change the lighting sequences to suit the mood.

Next year’s show will be held on the 25th and 26th October, again at Kempton Park Racecourse.

And so on we sailed over to the Rosmalen Jukebox Show. It would be fair to say that this show is 4 times larger than Jukebox Madness. It is held in the giant ‘Autotron’ building, and due to it’s proximity to the Belgian, French and German borders, it is truly an international show. It would seem that the general interest in 50’s ‘Americana’ is much more developed in this part of mainland Europe. The whole show reflected more of a ‘lifestyle’, than any show in the UK. Although there were hundreds of classic jukeboxes on show, and the huge car park was full of amazing vintage cars, there were also many stalls with furniture, lighting and vintage clothing on display.

It was a special show for us, in that it was the first occasion that Sound Leisure had exhibited a range of jukeboxes here. Our authorised Dutch distributors, Jukebox Gallery, were our kind hosts, and gave pride of place on their stand to Sound Leisure products. Even though Sound Leisure is soon to celebrate 30 years of jukebox manufacturing, we were very much the ‘new kids on the block’ as far as bringing our retro-style products to this market.

Our jukeboxes were very well received, the simple ‘21st Century’ mechanism, and the ‘Diamond Pack’ caused much interest, but most people were amazed at the overall quality of the products, particularly when shown a video clip of how the handbuilt cabinets were constructed.

So all-in all a very interesting show, and a good platform for our future development on the continent. A special thank you to Jukebox Gallery, for all their help, and for the ‘refreshments’ provided.

Sound Leisure is delighted to welcome Andrey Romanenko, and his company, S & A Entertainment, as new Moscow-based distributors for their classic retro-styled jukeboxes.

This is the first time that Sound Leisure products have been sold in the Russian capital. There has never been a recognised jukebox ‘market’ within Russia, but the massive increase in the sales of luxury items that has occurred in the last few years, makes a jukebox the perfect centrepiece to have in a games-room. S & A Entertainments also plan to sell jukeboxes to cafés, restaurants and casinos.

Andrey’s jukebox salon is based at the Holiday Inn Sokolniki. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with S & A Entertainments.

Kuwait Black n White DinerKuwaits Black and White Diner!

Sound Leisure are proud to announce the opening of the latest 50's style diner...in KUWAIT! The guys at the Black and White have made a great deal of getting the theme and detail right and of course no 50's diner would be complete without a classic jukebox. Steve Curtis of Steve's jukeboxes supplied the Manhattan installed in the Black and White, and like asound leisure jukeboxes was built to withstand the rigours of commercial life and we are confident it will look as good in years to come as it does today. The Manhattan is fitted with a coin mechanism to accept the Kuwaiti dinar and loaded with all the greatest hits of 50's rock n roll.

Due to Kuwait's strict drinking laws, the feeling in the diner should be like the early 50's in America, where youth culture sprung through diners as meeting places as kids could not go to bars. The addition of a jukebox provided kids with rock n roll music and subversly then attracted even more kids into diners in order to hear the latest hits, often not played by commercial radio stations. The american diner and the jukebox go hand in hand and Sound Leisure are always proud to install a "box" in a diner in order to keep up this tradition. We wish the Black and White well and look forward to it's success in Kuwait.

Jukebox Madness 2006

Yet again another Jukebox Madness Has come and gone. It seems as if we wait for it all year and it's over before we know it! We had a great time again this year it was all the better as Sound Leisure had some BRAND NEW things to show off. Firstly we have upgraded the sound systems in all our standard jukeboxes. The Manhattan, Gazelle and the Melody Classic Jukeboxes all now come with a specially designed Mk7 Amplifier that gives a whopping 300w - 150 watts per channel output! What's more is that this huge sound is delivered through our brand new speaker system featuring 2 tweeters, 2 mid range speakers and a huge 12" bass speaker. AWSOME!

We also launched our wireless bluetooth iPod adaptor. The kit, which can be included upon purchase or retro fitted, allows you to play your ipod through your Classic Jukebox wirelessly so you can control it from the comfort of your armchair!

Finally not to miss out on a NEW option in the "looks" department our Lighting Design Team has come up with the stunning Diamond Pack lighting system. Available as an optional extra when ordering a new machine, the system replaces the traditional rotating pilasters and standard light tubes with the latest in LED lighting technology. A series of settings allows the Red, Blue and Green LED's to produce almost any colour and crossfade between any number of them. Choose between the various preset lighting phases or stop the lighting on a colour of your choice! The Diamond Pack is clear, bright and stunning to behold It really has to be seen to be appreciated so where better than Jukebox Madness!

Our stand was busy non-stop over the show weekend and it was great to see so many familiar faces from last year and generally soak up the atmosphere you can only get from being in close confinement with other jukebox and nostalgia freaks! Than you to all who made it such a great weekend and we look forward to next year!
